The quickest and convenient way to get to Ella is via train. Preferably the Night mail train because most part of the journey will be at night and you will arrive in Ella around 7am plus you get to enjoy the glorious sun rise on the way. Believe me passing through Haputale at sunrise isn’t something to be missed.
From Ella town you can walk upto Kithal Ella station which is where the trail officially begins. For an average walker it would take around 30–40mts to get to Kithal Ella station.
- 15mts after passing the Kithal Ella station you need to turn left at a sharp hairpin bend.
- Walk straight and cross the wooden bridge near a small river side.
- From the bridge take the left path and keep going through a narrow walkway with tall bushes on both sides.
- At the end of the path you will come to a small open area with a stall selling tea and King coconut. (Have a break here. You will need it!)
- You will see a tea plantation in front of this shop and you need to go straight upwards through the tea bushes.
- Make sure to keep a strong foothold while climbing this area as there are no steps and there are a lot of small pebbles that makes the path slippery. Also wear proper shoes for the climb. Wearing flip flops makes the climb harder.
- Once you reach the top you will come to a flat land area with a gorgeous view of lush green mountains onto your left and thin tall trees onto your right.
- Mind you it’s about another 45mt climb to get to the top of the mountain. Keep going!
- From here on the climb gets really steep but the path widens towards the end. Watch your footing and don’t slip as there are no steps. Keep heading up and turn to your left at the end of the climb. This straight path will lead to the viewing point and you’re done with the climb!
